Scholar in Residence - weekend of January 31
The shul is excited to be hosting Michal Fox Smart for a weekend of learning. There will be a catered dinner Friday night after davening (approximately 6:30PM) followed by a shiur with Michal. This dinner will be used as an opportunity to raise funds for future learning opportunities at TBS. Saturday morning, Michal will teach again after lunch (there will be challah rolls for people to make motzi so this can be their main meal). The weekend is being underwritten in memory of Joan Sanow z"l who would have been 83 on January 31st.
The Friday night dinner and learning will be limited in number, so please sign up if you are interested. The deadline for dinner sign-up is Friday, January 24th. Cost is $72/adult and $36 for children who eat a children's portion of food (please use your discretion).
For more information about our scholar, see the brief bio below.
Michal Fox Smart has led ground-breaking work in the field of Jewish education for more than thirty years, working at the nexus of personal, spiritual, and professional development. Michal pioneered Jewish outdoor and environmental education in the U.S., co-founding COEJL, TEVA, and directing the Isabella Freedman Retreat Center. Michal served as Associate Principal of Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy and Director of Ayeka North America, emerging as a national leader on soulful pedagogy and the spiritual development of educators. Her book Kaddish: Women’s Voices, Winner of the National Jewish Book Award, addresses issues of inclusion in Jewish communal life, family dynamics, as well as the powerful role that ritual and prayer can play in healing. Michal also expanded the reach of Jewish mindfulness and spirituality, serving as Chief Program Officer for IJS. As a leadership coach, Michal helps executives in and beyond the Jewish community to show up as their fullest and most resourced selves. A Fulbright Scholar, Michal completed her undergraduate studies at Princeton University and earned her Master’s degree from Cornell as a Wexner Graduate Fellow and is currently part of the Core Semikha program at Maharat. She lives in Stamford, CT and is the proud Ema of five young adults.
ABOUT THE TREMONT STREET SHUL
Temple Beth Shalom, also known as the Tremont Street Shul, is a warm, friendly, traditional synagogue located near the center of Cambridge, Massachusetts. We embrace people of all ages from a wide variety of backgrounds, and we welcome newcomers to feel at home in the shul. We support three styles of Jewish worship: egalitarian, partnership, and orthodox, as well as fostering many kinds of educational, social, and cultural experiences.
We host Minyan Tehillah, an independent prayer group, as well as the Alef-Bet Child Care (a preschool with day care hours!), and we are often engaged in collaborative Jewish programming. In addition to a robust worship and programming schedule, on the first Friday of each month (with rare exceptions; double-check the calendar), we host a semi-potluck dinner open to all! A special treat of the Tremont Street community is that our weekly Shabbat/Saturday morning services are followed by a kiddush lunch at which everyone is welcome. We look forward to seeing you, and please feel free to reach out if we can be helpful in any way.
